Mill at Dumont

Jeff Ramsey
Found these stereotypes on a online auction site. Does anyone know the name of this mill at Dumont? Looks like they are relaying the mainline rail and could be a way to date these images.

A number of shots around this area taken by L.C.McClure and Lachlan McLean show re-railing, don't have time to review my USGS stuff right now but there was the Freeland and the Dumont mills in the area, that's not the Freeland which was built against a rocky bluff.  Sundance's Colorado Central refer to it as the Dumont Mill.

Supposedly 1890-1900 according to the DPL, I strain to see the lettering on the Boxcar in this view, again with re-railing visible, the lettering gives me the appearance it is the C&S "Colorado Road" scheme.  The switchstand are of the Elliot F&S Co.

USGS 1917 lists this Mill as the Mountain Queen.

Edit:  This is more likely to be the Syndicate Mill (30 Stamps) whereas the Mountain Queen is listed as 10 Stamps (USGS1917).  A photo of a small Mill on the opposite bank of Clear Creek served by a short siding is shown on pg299 of Digerness' Mineral Belt III although unidentified.   That location was just east of Spring Gulch.

In November our Society purchased the Dumont Depot. We plan to restore it, move it and then donate it to the Mill Creek Valley Historical Society as a railroad heritage museum. It is anticipated that this all can be accomplished by 2018.
I will send your email, wanting to know the name of the mill over to the Mill Creek Valley people who have a vast knowledge of the Dumont area.
I also will also see if I can have one of our members send some pictures he took of the C&S 1903, caboose that the C&S Historical Society is restoring in Silver Plume, They have really done a great job so far, and for a two axle caboose that set outside for over 50 years, they really should be congratulated; as it looks great.

Re: Mill at Dumont

I contacted the Mill Creek Valley Historical Society and this is the reply I received from the President, who has lived in the area for over 70 years:
I am not sure of this mills name.  In my years here, there was no mill where this appears to be.  It looks to be near the Freeland on the south east end of Dumont as the house visible in the photo is still there at the north east corner of Dumont.  We will do a little research and let you know what we learn.

Jim, this will very interesting to see what you come up with, as this whole area has been a fascination for me for 30+years.

At this Mill in question, before the extra siding was laid.

http://digital.denverlibrary.org/cdm/fullbrowser/collection/p15330coll21/id/3311/rv/singleitem/rec/3

From what I can find so far,
The C&S Trackage Map 1923/1929 does list a private siding for the Freeland Dev. & Trans. Co at Dumont 637ft of Side tracks at Milepost 42+66ft, the Dumont Depot being at Mp42+2290ft.

The USGS list of Mills in Clear Creek 1917 doesn't mention a specific Freeland Mill, calling it the Mountain Queen at South Cl.Cr. Dumont and another listed at 1/4mile East of Dumont called the Clear Creek & Gilpin. Yet two more listed as the Blue Ridge Mill and Syndicate Mill  at South Clear Creek, Dumont.  The Syndicate was large at 30 Stamps.

In this enlargement there is also a large Mill or powerhouse around the side of the Hill extreme right.  The large wastedump visible upper right is seen in the later colour view.
The Specht mill is in the middle distance along the creek bank with its Aerial Jig-back Tram terminal visible.  This also known as the Clear Creek & Gilpin Mines which came later.

The later Clear Creek & Gilpin Tunnel, the Specht Mill is behind the trussbridge of the minetramway.

Above Dumont and before Lawson at Milepost 42+5031ft was the Reynolds Mills with a sidetrack of 304ft, listed as partial dismantled by the USGS (1917)

To further muddy the Clear Creek, and this discussion {:))  there was also this Mill.(at Dumont)

We competed in the "Oh My Gawd Rodeo" last night in Dumont. The Fairgrounds are about a quarter mile east of where the depot sits today. There is an extremely large and toxic looking tailings pile on the west end. I had asked Chris to do his homework to identify them, and he referred me back to this thread.
Viola.... there is the waste dump right in front of me. The fairgrounds are located in the pasture just beyond it. Much of old Highway 6 (now Road 312) is built upon the railroad grade through here.

I did not allow the horses (or Roper!) to drink the water.

While we are at Dumont....

a little C&S orientation for the certain Gentleman who thinks I'm a little too occupied with the Mines and Mills of Clear Creek.  To which I must point out that they were all part and parcel of the CC/UPD&G/C&S  which makes this photo all the more poignant.

Rails from the scrapping of the line back to Idaho Springs.  Must have been switching around some carloads to place an mty for loading.  March 1939.

I came across this item of interest while looking for something entirely unrelated.  It has been my experience that entering a specific search term into the CHNC can result in no matches found yet the same term can actually be in print form and only discovered via another search term: your mileage may vary, go figure!!

Perhaps this will help Jeff, narrowing it down.  Questions arise as to just how long the project took to reach Dumont.
