Leadville "Skip Day", May 4, 1931

Jim Courtney
A short 8 minute movie of the cream of Leadville's youth in the Spring of 1931:

Should give Keith some ideas as to new figures and vehicles to add to his version of Leadville . . .

A lot to see here, for the historical detail-minded type.  Love the
nasty baseball diamond !  It said the date was May 4, and I am looking
for the snow.  Next scene, there it is !  Great video.  👍

They could have been more considerate and gone East aways, for better views ....

I was struck at how poignant the little piece of film is . . . none of the teenagers goofing off for the camera have a clue, that the "recession" that began the prior year will harden into the "Great Depression", with devastating consequences for their lives. Nor can they imagine, that in 10 years their nation will be pulled into a world war. They are all partying like it's 1928!!

I was also surprised at how tidy and well maintained Leadville was in 1931. The small frame houses opposite the school appear freshly painted. There is no Dorthea Lange depression-era feeling about Leadville yet.

And I had no idea that the hems of the girl's skirts were so high in 1931 . . .

In conjunction to Jim's statements on the national economy in 1931 in looking at A.A. Brownie  Anderson's time book I noted that starting in mid March 1931to October 1931 he shows may days "layed in Como".   Several of the times  were for 2-5 days at a time.
It makes one wonder how many of those "kids" stayed in Leadville.
