Thanks for noticing Paul. Roper had posted this picture from the Bob Boorman collection on the home page here: C&Sn3

South Park
Disirregardlessly of what they are doing (clearing a rock slide ???),
this is a great shot that I have never seen before.  Seeing new images,
especially of areas along the line not often seen, is a real treat.

Note the heavy rope beside the rails and the guys high up on the hill.
I suspect this is another case of clearing too much away from the tracks
left them vulnerable to unstable rock fields above and snow drifting in
winter.

So, who has a hoard of operational photo images of the mainline from
Garos to Box CaƱon to share ???

Also note the heavy chain draped over the smoke box.

What position up down or middle within that curved link of the Walshaerts gear would govern whether the loco is in forward or reverse? Also, what order of  operations would an engineer go through to get a loco moving?

Are there any photos showing draped chain besides this one and the one taken on the Deansbury Bridge?

Robert,
from the look of the top link and the connection to the valve link I would say in mid gear. Paul R.

Re: Header has a new image

The chain and rope and guys on the hillside have me thinking
this movement was sent out to clear rocks off the rails and others
that might come down later.  Using methods like those used to
clean up wrecks, the crew sets up block and tackle with deadman
pull points and uses the locomotive's back and forth travel on the
rails to pull the boulders clear.  Or maybe it was an excusion outing
of "interpretive dancers" from Boulder looking to find their "inner
woman" ?

When you drive to St. Elmo along the old grade near Chalk Creek Canyon there is a historical marker with this same picture talking about the DSP&P and the line up to St. Elmo.  That's a great drive for those of you who have not done it.

It is!If you don't have to dodge MILLIONS of ATVers with a "Get outta my way!"attitude. Those guys on the ATVs and the beefed up pickups and SUVs forget some of us have got to pick our way around(and among) the potholes(translation:Craters of the Moon)and give us a break. The whole grade from St Elmo to Hancock needs  the"moon craters" filled or at least made livable.Same way between Midway Tank and Woodstock on the west side.

Put the rails back in and it will solve that ATV/big truck issue !

Any chance the new Como rails can be extended to Pitkin ?  Is
that too much to ask ?

You could almost have a Como like operation from Pitkin depot to the Quartz Loop.

I have never had an issue with the ATV's.  I went up there outside of the normal season, I think it was April/May, and there was no one there.  It was so peaceful.  I have never seen water so clear and pure and smelt air so fresh.  Such an amazing place.

I am thinking more like Como TO Pitkin and back !  You'd
put all the other tourist lines out of business with that run !
