Finial Test

Southpark
As I was doing the finial press proofing for out new Memories book, C&Sng Railroaders, Photos, Memories & then some Along The Old South Park Line, I discovered that I had not mentioned a location "along" but "not on" the DSP&P.  The location will be "shown" in the publication but will not be mentioned. The finial test  is "do you know about Strouseville" and its location?   Tom Klinger

Tom,

As best I can tell, Strouseville was a small settlement, platted in 1874, in Jefferson County (per DPL records). Its location seems to be to the East of Morrison, but evidently not on the Morrison branch of the DSP&P. I can't find a map that locates the place, much like "East of Eden".

It is probably long gone (or swallowed up as a suburb of Denver).

I'd hoped for extra points for illustrations, but couldn't find any. Your post suggests that your new book has a photo.

Please post a notice here when your new book is released, so I can buy it for my collection . . .

Re: Final Test

Tom,

the real test would be to find a picture of a D. S.P.& P. Depot sporting a Finial, which was limited only to Watertanks.

From Leanne C. Boyd and H. Glen Carson's Atlas of Colorado Ghost Towns Vol. 1

(Entry)  Strouseville  E. of Morrison. platted 1874 no P.O.

Crofutt's Gripsackguide has no listing of a Strouseville nor P.O. in the year 1880.

I'd still like to see some discussion on reasons for the lack of Finials used on the D. S.P.&P. though, maybe after the Proofreader gets done with his chores.

I dunno Keith, since it is purely an extension of the crenelated Ridge cresting and I was understanding that particular end treatment had another name, however I can't find where I read that. It did cross my mind when I posted the above, let's see if Keith chimes in: "how about Leadville?"

Finial treatment as applied to a Ridgecrest, on my Mowershed.

Or maybe the valve pulls mast on the Birdseye tank?

For having access to the big city and trendy architects with the latest copy of Western Building News floating about the offices, the South Park structures are notably finial-defficient.
