DSP&P 191 drawings

Norm Acker
Hi group, I'm with a volunteer team at the CRRM, and we've been tasked with building a new cab for 191.

Unfortunately, she's lived outdoors for all of her time here, and the poplar cab put on her here many years ago is in dire need of replacement. We plan to use white oak this time around, and with any luck and perseverance from our Director and our Board in the next several years she might even finally get a place to be displayed indoors.

While we have an extensive library of resources, drawings and photographs of her in her early years are rare.

I'm curious if John Maxwell ever drew her up (he seems to have drawn almost everything else!), and if so, we would be interested in acquiring a copy of his drawing(s) of her. I may also reach out through the Museum to DPL, but it seems they have their hands full with the sheer amount of drawings that they are now custodians if, and that might take time. We're anxious to start making drawing of our own for her new cab, especially if we can find drawings that pre-date the existing cab.

If any of you knowledgeable folks know if Mr. Maxwell drew plans, and you by chance have access to them, it'd be great to hear from you.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Thanks guys, just what I was looking for. And Chris, it amazes me that you find pictures some of us have never seen before. :)

Norm and all, be careful using Maxwell drawings as a single source. He was notorious for errors and you must check  everything against photos. As an example of what I'm talking about, note that the cab in the photograph is at least 6" taller than his drawing.

Back in the day, several manufacturers and importers used his drawings and measurements which contained numerous errors. All of the best builders avoided using his drawings as they were, and had to check and recheck everything against photographs.

His collection of drawings is vast, but be very careful. There are many errors.

Compare to the Maxwell drawings found here. Note cab dimensions. On one, the width of the cab is 7', the other is 5'2". The photo looks like it's more like the 5'2" version. Good luck!
