I first hiked the the Hancock-East Portal grade in Aug 1977.In addition to that I've walked it at least 3 other times. One year that included starting from the Romley bridge  because the van I had  couldn't clear the shoo-fly grading.Last year I walked to the West portal from Woodstock Loop.

One small caution:  If you're coming from the 'lowlands', you might be wary about going up to Guanella or other high pass the first day.  I did this (starting from northern VA, about 350' elevation).  When I got out of the car at the pass, I was very faint and dizzy (first time I've felt any kind of altitude problem.)  I went back down to Georgetown, and was fine the next day.

Don Gustavson II
I have not posted on this forum since returning from our trip to Colorado.
Wanted to at least get a few pictures of our trip on July 15 posted.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. We had a great time.
It was really cool to visit some of the towns, locations and old road bed of the railroad.

It was a dark and stormy evening when we arrived in Como.
There were no signs of life.
A thunder storm took out power to the whole town. And it was still raining.
As we parked at the eating house, I have to admit. It was a very eerie scene.

I told my Dad that this is where we where staying. This guy on the internet, of which I have never really met said we could stay here.
My Dad gave me the.. "What did you get us into?" look.

We knocked, but no answer. So I slowly opened the door.
And there was the first sign of life to greet us.
Shadow.

Shadow lifted one eyebrow to say Hi.
Dave came downstairs to greet us. Explained the issue with the power and he showed us our room.
It was great to meet him. Had a nice time chatting with him and others while we where in town.

The power did come back up later that night. But we where willing to stay even without power.

Dave has done a great job on the Eating house. We would absolutely stay there again.
The outside needs the paint stripped off, but the inside looks great!

The next day was the work day.
It was nice to meet Jeff Young and others involved in all of this.
Got to help out on the Stub Switch and even pound a few spikes.
Did some work on the Road also. Colorado 8.

Went over to Breckenridge to pick up two frogs.
We drove them back over to Como via Boreas Pass. Kind of neat that we used the old rail line over the pass to help re-build the railroad in Como.

Rail to be brought from Breckenridge to Como.
I am glad I got to be a part of this project.

Had time to look around the area and take pictures also.
Walked down to where the bridge was at Park Gulch and see first hand what kind of scenery is there.
Helpful since I am molding that spot.

We helped move things around to make room for No 4.
We got to ride the Georgetown loop railroad. Talked to a few people after the ride that worked for the railroad, and got in to see the Tender for No 4.
I will post a picture in this thread.
