Thanks Matt,

which begs the question.... did the LC&S use Eilers Slag or did the C&S, (later BN) use same prior to the LC&S.  I've never come across the answer so far.

My first interest in Colorado Railroads was when I was living in Lyons and of course the Longmont to Lyons branch had a similar history of switching from NG to Standard, however tracking down early information on that line was much harder.

Hi Chris,
I am betting that ballast was placed by the BN. From what I've seen from riding the LC&S since its inception, significant roadbed improvements are not high on their agenda.

This pic was taken during 2012, looking straight at Mt. Democrat:

This one was taken at the same switch in July of this year, although looking the other direction. They have cleaned things up nicely:

Cheers,

Just above milepost 139 on Tuesday. Thought some of you might like to see a bit of the onset of winter. There was plenty of snow when I drove past this point an hour or so ago.

Paul,

Try contacting the mining museum in Leadville,  I believe I remember seeing a map or track plan for the mine at some point.  If they cant help let me know and I will stop by next time I'm up in Leadville

That's definitely narra gage enough.

Keep us posted on that scene as we get further into winter if you can. I believe there is an actual forecast of possible snowfall for Monday.

And that C-48 will be a beauty.

Is there a group working on this locomotive?  If not, it needs one and badly needs to be sheltered.  I completed the engine below after my retirement from CPR/D&H and am happy to provide information to others who might do so.  The job is 90 percent rust removal and treatment and hard work.  This restoration only cost around $4000 of the Museum's money for materials..

The Leadville enginehouse and yard should be considered a historic site and preserved as such, as they are little-changed from when it was an operating railroad.

I live in New York State, but grew up in northern Colorado and remember C&S steam well in the late-1950's.

Are 641's cab windows still extant?  Even if rotted, they should be retained for patterns to make new ones.  Photos of the 638 look like its windows are already gone.  Some Santa Fe cabs may have the same size sashes, but nearly all the AT&SF park engines had their cab windows removed before donation.  The typical locomotive window catches rain at the bottom, which runs down between the steel cab and the wood lining, causing rot and rust, hence another need to shelter the engine.  Still, they should be replaced properly and not with the one-piece substitute sometimes seen, C&S 60 an example.

Re: C&S Standard Gauge Leadville Operations

Hi Bob,
As far as I know, no one is working to restore this locomotive; the last time it was painted the herald was painted over. I work in Leadville occasionally and it bugged me to see it missing, so I volunteered to paint it back on.

The cab windows currently look like this:
