I was curious about how the Leadville, Colorado & Southern got so much railroad and equipment for $10, so I began looking around for info. I first found info from 2003 that explained the role the Climax Mine had in making sure the tracks were not ripped up.
This older post explains that situation in more detail.
However, I later happened upon an article in
Leadville Today from 2013 that explains another factor: environmental concerns that Burlington Northern did not want to deal with. I wrote up
a post about it here.
Unfortunately, I haven't ridden the L,C&S since the 1990s. Has much changed to the operation, facilities, or equipment?
