All of the wonderful folks in the Como railroad, Thank you! Most people are all thinking about Sat's "fun", but I would like to tell you that their friends of days gone-by were looking, and enjoying, from a distance some other time and place. The ones that I knew years ago; my dad, Dick Kindig, Mac Poor, Ray Hilner, Ollie Gibson and many others. Again, Thank you. Art Gibson

Thanks, Art, I couldn't agree more, and very much share your sentiment.

Indeed, Art,
Ever since I bought a copy of Mac Poor's book followed by The Pictorial Supplement . . . almost 40 years ago, I've obsessively studied photos and day dreamed about what it would be like to have Como restored with operating steam, a C&S version of Durango, Silverton or Chama. (The Georgetown Loop restoration didn't do it for me -- no roundhouse there and the pesky Interstate tended to ruin the experience). Never thought it would happen in my life time! Kuddos to all that made this happen. ![]() Now, if only we could reclaim the right of way and extend the track up to the Kenosha wye . . . what a great fan trip that would make.

Jim: I couldn't agree with you more. Look at what the folks have done in Maine at the WWF rr have done. With thwtype of determination that the guys in Como have this could be a reality too.
My hats off to them for bringing 'Klondike Kate' up to Como. Btw, is that gondola an ex-Rio Grande car? Fred

Doesn't 285 cross the old ROW three times between Como and Kenosha ?
That is going to GROSSLY complicate the legal end of putting rail back down and overall operations. ![]()

I have been thinking about this and the sensible thing would be a flyover at the bottom of Kenosha and then move US 285 to the east of its current line bypassing Jefferson as it does Como and rejoining somewhere near Red Hill.. We wold need to make provision there in case we want to extend down to Garo.

Flyover ? Is that what I would call an "overpass" ? As in a "freeway overpass" ?

Art,
It was noted on my Saturday talk on Boreas Pass that a "young" Art crossed the pass in 1937!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hope I had that correct. Tom Klinger |

If I need to translate for our non English speaking audience, where do I start where do I stop?

Not sure if you are being insulting or not, but I have only heard the term
"flyover" used for literally that, flying over an object or area for reconaissance. I was not trying to be flippant.

Sth Pk,
Flyovers down here on both rail and road. Also known as Overbridges too. Our yard in PNth still has an escape from Loco depot to the Station over the yard to goods shed road that we called the Flyover.

Hmmmm .... again, not trying to be "flip". Just never heard that
term used that way, and I have been in the construction trade my whole life. Now, you down-under types have all sorts of crazy names for stuff. Almost makes a game to understand what my Aussie friends are talking about at times ! but I like odd phrases and language. That's why I asked. ![]()

FWIW - I live in the Phoenix/Mesa area. Flyover is a very common term for the parts of highway interchanges that loop 90 degrees onto another level. Other than incessant chattering about the rain, and if we might get some, most traffic reporters apparently love saying the word 'flyovers'. ADOT (AZ DOT) uses the word 'flyover' frequently; e.g., ADOT talk of constructing a flyover ramp

Well, now that I've added "flyover" to my bridge vernacular, let's
put it to use, shall we ? It has always been my "vision" to see Como rebuilt as a museum and operating HQ for DSP&P-related steam ops. Giving it some thought, the options of where to run on original roadbed give three options, and one I wrote off right away as too hard on the locomotives (Boreas) and another as too dull for tourists (Red Hill), but that Kenosha offers a sort of middle ground, with a spectacular view (even if it would be a hard pull to the top). Given the comment about a "flyover", one helluva way to make a historic RR operation known to all who drive 285 across the South Park would be to put the railroad on a long, pile flyover at the base of Kenosha Hill and let the highway keep the current grade. It would not be historically correct, but it would ease the grade and be easier on the motive power, and it sure would catch everyone's eye as they drove along and under it, ESPECIALLY if it had a train on it. Just a thought .... ![]()

Reminiscent of the V&T crossing Highway 50 and terminating at a new station in Carson City NV. Shame was they had no way to reach the RR Museum or get to the grade on the other side of town which is now a walking trail. Why not Antero Jct.(actually a little bit north near the Salt Works)to Garo with a gated crossing(against the trains),follow the main to the 285 crossing N of Red Hill.
|
|
Not sure CDOT would agree to any type of grade crossing, you would need to get across US285 at Red Mountain and then 9 at Garo. I prefer flyovers, tunneling under would have snow blockage issues.

Could this become a reality? Sure would be a boost for the economy up tnere.
