Another DPL Gem: Trout Creek Canyon

Mis-labled as to being in the Platte Canon, and therefore missed by the chroniclers of the line in the published books.  While not a great photo for discerning details such as road-name or clearly identifying the Locomotive number, it does however reveal just how precarious an existance the roadbed had with the track being laid not much higher than high-water level.  A visible erosion line can be seen at the edge of the Ties in the lower righthand corner.

Very nice catch Chris.

I believe that this part of the canyon is now under several tens of feet of mud.

Yeah and notice all the debris shoved off the track as the propensity for TC to become a raging little monster in the late 1890s grew! This is Box Canyon, of course. It appears the engine is sitting on top of a "culvert" as they called it - another single span trestle I'm sure. (Sixteen feet).

My how friendly the RR was in those days; they'd stop just about anywhere for a pi-cher or two...

Something over 40 feet - and a lake, as a dam has been put in (iirc). I have, somewhere, a 5 or 6 inch chunk of rail dug out of that forty some feet given to me by a friend who was involved in the study to put in the Dam. Nice piece of 35lb rail. Yum!
