Alpine Tunnel questions

1. Does anyone know the background of the wood Alpine Tunnel memorial display at the west portal shown in the (very blurry) 1991 image below?
I know it is no longer there. It was removed sometime in the 1990s or early 2000s to my knowledge.



2. Does anyone know when the facing of the east portal of Alpine Tunnel collapsed. I was there in 2003 and it hadn't collapsed yet. But upon my next visit in 2018 it had.
