So much information sits out there on the main blog site under-utilized (un-appreciated?). Its the main reason we have lost one of the major contributors to this blog/forum. At times I wonder if it is time to pull the blog down and only support the forum? I do realize it is easier to communicate here on the forum. But many "McAnswers"* can also be found with a little searching elsewhere on the site. Many thanks to Chris and Jim for stepping up to remind everyone with actual links when necessary!

Here are some links to discussions of the moguls:

Thanks Darel: I am slowly getting around to doing more research. I am so new to all things C&S its not funny. I will look at those Roper's items tonight after I can sit for awhile. Lol . I enjoy all the input and read the forum quite a bit. The blog is really helpful too. But like you said its really underused.

Just remember to use light rail and spindly bridges to restrict the weight of the locomotives assigned to your C&S division.

Recall that the ex-C&S line from Gunnison to the Baldwin mines, after it was operated by the D&RGW beginning in 1910, never had upgrades to allow heavy power. The light bridges and rail are the reason that the three little D&RGW C-16's (223, 268 and 278) remained in service out of Gunnison until the early 1950's -- nothing heavier could work the line!

Not wishing to get too involved but the C&S on formal exchange of the Ohio Extension to the D&RGW, included rail and bridge materials. The 70lb rail was laid by 1937 but the Bridges never received an upgrade, that alone being the reason for the retention of C-16's.  223 went in '41, the 278 was the usual power, 268 only shows up on the Baldwin Br. scrap train since it was usually the power for the dead-end Sapinero line and occasional runs to Crested Butte.

Chris;
As usual mighty fine facts. I am planning on a trip to Gunnison next summer. And I am taking my fat-bike with to explore the area of Ohio creek. The c-16 #268 I know still exists at the Pioneer Museum just east of downtown. Although we've walked a lot of the 'other' RR right away between Gunnison and Altamont, we never got to Ohio Creek.
I have reading Roper"s snapshots and between you and Mr. Poole, you have provided a plethora of great information for me, and we appreciate that.
So my RR goals this winter is pretty large.

If you go to Gunnison, be sure to drive west to Cimarron.

The Park Service constructed a display of C-16 278 + boxcar + short caboose. They sit on the central span of the Cimarron Canon bridge, disconnected from the rest of the world, but easily photographed from the near by road.

Back in '93 we 'discovered'  Cimmaron.  We took a break there on our way to go camping and mountain biking up in Crested Butte. That site is amazing. I heard some place that the loco was removed to be restored.

The whole train was removed from the trestle several years ago. the 278 has been cosmetically restored and when I saw it in 2016 was stored in the corporate yard to the south end of the park. I have seen that the boxcar has been restored, I don't know the status of the caboose. When I stopped in 2016 they were repainting the trestle. I didn't get to Cimmaron this year so don't know the current status.

You got that shot. We had an old school bus/RV and we drove it up and over Kebler Pass back in 1995. We camped at a NFS campground on the Taylor River directly across it from that other RR. We waded the river to Alta

Re: Air tank placement on the Moguls.

Hello everyone!

Happy New Year one and all!!!
Been working on the moguls a bit. Getting together some measurements for the tall tender tool boxes to have a fellow On30 modeler print out for me. Going to be a bit of a chore redoing the coal board extensions. I put some in place but I didn't have measurements as to the height of the boards. With that said, here's the question of the day.
The extension boards. What would be the correct height? I have scale 12" x 2" lumber. Would that work? And if they used wood as boards, how late ij the C&S timeline were they used?

Hi Fred, woke up to 17° up in Northern Alabama this morning. Maybe we're due for a break from this wintery cold soon. Hope you are warmer down there in LA. (Lower Alabama)
My turnouts are starting to bind up.

If you are wanting to add a wood upper extension over the flaired sides a 2x12 would be just right.

Looking back through this thread today I saw the nice work L Williams has done with some Broadway Limited 2-8-0's. There are a number of really nice rework projects being done by this group, and I'm glad to see it. Don't take "no" for an answer, you'll be amazed what you can do!

Re: Air tank placement on the Moguls.

Thanks Robert. There's more stuff lurking on the horizon for both #21 & #22. I have to send a friend dimensions for the toolboxes on the front of the tender. Mike was kind enough to measure them for me. I want to take it slow. As this is uncharted territory for me. Also maybe a precision scale plow for #21. Just have to take my time and do it one step at a time.

Fred, Wiseman has the old Back Shop line now, and one of the castings in that line is the large toolbox that was made for the old PFM Moguls. I have used it so many times it's almost like a signature on my engines. I'll see if I can find the part number and post it. Are you modeling later years on the C&S? If you crave early years, PSC has the really old style like I used on #7.

Mike: we chose to model the decade between 1920-1930. Our first module lumber gets delivered this week. We are building a 3' x 6' one to build our ficticous town of Crandall on. Crandall is my wife's maiden name. It kinda stuck after we found out that her grandfather worked for the Rock.

Mike I just had to post a picture of our #21. I installed a new bell and a ridgway. I know that I need to redo the cinder tube underneath the hand rail, but I need to fabricate new hand rails. Still needs a whistle, but Keith from Wiseman is sending me one with my C&S coach kit.
